As long as the fan is on, the unit is quite warm. I've had this unit for approximately 1 year. The good part is that the audio and video through this receiver work well: HDTV picture looks great and the surround sounds great. I'm concerned enough about the safety of this unit (wood, power cables, and heat don't mix well), that I'm going to replace it - despite it being one year old, and working fine. If the fan is off, the unit gets hot - hot enough that it's uncomfortable to touch. I only use the HDMI inputs and outputs, but they work fine.I have another issue with the unit: it runs hot. I have a dedicated fan behind the unit that blows air underneath it.
I've always trusted JVC, but decided to go to Onkyo this time. Returned item. Looks like they are more interested in the full package entertainment systems. JVC has kind of moved away form personal component recievers. It wasnt exactly what I was looking for. It was as sleak as it looks.
Finally found it in the set up menus). I bought this unit refurbished from Amazon. I have the unit connected to Samsung TV, Oppo DVD player, Mirage 5.1 Nanosat speakers, and Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder. I am very pleased with the units appearance, compact size, operation, and features.
I can start up a playlist on iTunes on the computer and play it over the home theater speakers. It does only have two HDMI inputs, but for my set up--DVD player and VCR/DVD player, both with HDMI connections--it is sufficient. My computer and my home theater are in the same fairly small room so there is no transmission problem. I really like the included sending unit that allows you to play music from your computer.
The surround sound is wonderful and the auto set up was easy to use and, to my ears, accurate. However, after reading all reviews before buying, I was sure to put the receiver in a location that had lots of upward open space for venting any heat. If I hadn't been told it was refurbished when I got it it would have been very easy to believe it was new. The unit does get warm, altough I don't know that it is unusually hot for electronic components.
Having the set up and instructions onscreen made set up easy, although the manual is somewhat complex (an example is when trying to set up the Panasonic VCR there was a warning in the manual as to a setting that was needed, but it didn't tell you where to go to change the setting. It works well with all of them. The only unit that the JVC remote will not work with is the Oppo, as there is currently no code for it (I even emailed JVC to see if a code had been set after the manual was prepared).
My TV is a late 80's model JVC and so does not have HDMI. Video up conversion is remarkable - everyone who has been to my house when the TV was on remarks on the picture clarity. Center and fronts as well as the bass picked up immediately. That's my next purchase.Overall I gave it a 4 even through it should probably be a 4.5 but I am somewhat discouraged by the streaming audio which was one of the reasons I liked this specific model. I assumed it would work - read several reviews where people talked about interference but always hoped for the best. Waited over a year for this so as to have the cash to buy it.
My rear speakers could not work on the auto sound setup (I adjusted them manually) because I assume they are too old. I did not test it out to most people's standards as I am using s-video to the TV. Got it home, plugged it in and like a champ off it went. It didn't work acceptably - it worked - the sound was just distorted, cut in and out and so I just packed that in. Overall - I really like this receiver. Couple of things still surprised me after watching this and reading every review done on it.
Wireless streaming audio is almost worthless in my environment.
I finally told them not to return it and bought an Onkyo receiver which was cheaper, has 4 HDMI inputs, and sounds wonderful.I obviously got a lemon, but what infuriated me was JVC's denial that there was a problem with the unit and refusal to replace it. I bought this receiver over 2 years ago and have sent it back to JVC 4 times. I just signed a release form for JVC to junk it. I wasted a lot of money and time and am glad to be rid of this receiver. Except for the time that it wouldn't turn on at all, JVC denied that there is any problem. The unit shuts down sporadically with any minor blip in volume whether from a dvd, xbox or tv.
